The India Paintings of 1996
During January-February of 1996 a travel grant from the San Francisco Art Institute made it possible for me to go to India, this time for the Hindus instead of the Muslims for which I had gone to Asia including India 25 years before. Out of the 1996 trip came the perhaps fifty "India Paintings" of 1996-7. All of these paintings were made with the conscious intention to reject any anecdotal travel picture imagery—if you were to recognize the place the painting is a failure. My intention was to paint only from my present feeling what I remembered of the feeling aroused by what I saw then, or my general feeling of the vastness, sensuality, darkness and absoluteness of the presence of India itself.
