The two major things that happened in my painting in 2000, were first the beginning of work on my 2003 Retrospective at the Oakland Museum, and second, my trip to China in June..  Writing the exhibition catalog required a biographical sketch, and I began to write a memoir as a base for what was conceived as a much briefer sketch in the catalog.  Writing the memoir led to re-creating the images of early paintings that had been very long lost, and that led to many paintings throughout the year of signs and symbols, memories and feelings I had not met for fifty years or more.  All of the paintings on this page came from that.

The other major event was my China Trip of June 2000--a trip I consciously planned as being my final journey there. (I had been to China twelve times since my first trip in 1986.)  Out of the trip came a series of paintings with images from Lao Tze's Tao Teh Qing, and several notebooks.  Click here for Lao Tze.
