Untitled
Late fall, 1991

Throw the leaves of a long summer's fading into the fresh water of new autumnal springs;
the heart at the center, the sun half above and half below the horizon--
live always in the streaming of the world.

The Dust and Ashes of Beulah Land
December 31, 1991-January 1, 1992
(Collection Oakland Museum)

I found scraps left over from collages and drawings of the mid 1960’s, things I had not been able to use then (they were too minor, and by the late 60’s I was in my gigantea phase).  They were now the last fragments of a time that would surely never return.  I mined them and my memories for content, slowly using all the scraps of thirty years until nothing was left.  This folder of Beulah’s last poppy in the ashes of death was the end.  But there is a sunflower trying there to call for a future.
